Fresh Photo Shoot
My friend Courtney asked me to shoot some promotional photos for the re-branding of her business. She is putting several different businesses together and naming the whole thing Fresh. She has a space in downtown Waxahachie that is both her flower shop and a place for gatherings, parties, and events. This presented me with a unique opportunity to bring my photo compositing skills to one of my favorite types of photography.
The photo above is an interior photo composite of eleven images. In order to make the picture bright and vibrant across the entire frame I had to make a composite. This sort of photo is achieved by setting the camera on a tripod and moving a remotely triggered flash around the room. Using this technique I am able to bring up the shadows, brighten the floor, and make a gorgeous interior photo. This is also the method I use to photograph real estate for clients who need the best possible photo to help show their property. It is also a fine example of why I light everything.
Making a Good Photo Great
In the above example we see a single photo with no fill flash anywhere. It is one frame shot in available light that comes through the giant windows in the space. For most people this would be a fine photo to use as a promo or to put on their website. My clients come to me because they expect more than this in a photo. A lot of photographers would just bracket several shots, make an awful HDR photo, and call it a day. I have no particular problem with HDR except that it can be very overdone and look just horrible. By using a single Nikon speedlight and then layering several photos together in Photoshop I can create the photo shown at the top. It is the difference between a good photo and a great photo. The final picture is more a work of digital art than photograph.
Putting it Together
The photos above are examples of the photos that go into making an interior composite photo. I use this technique in every type of photography that I do. By taking several photos and layering them together I can create the perfect photo for real estate or advertising. The photo shoot itself only took about two hours. Each final image takes anywhere from a couple hours to a couple days to complete. The above photo took about a day to finish and is comprised of eleven total images. I use a combination of layer masks, selections, curves and several other tools to create a photo that is bright and vibrant from throughout the entire picture. It is well worth the effort, as my clients are able to show their property in the best light (excuse the pun) possible.
Final Fresh Photos
Here are some of the final images, all of them composites, from the photo shoot at Fresh.
